Intuition as innovation for those who seek to heal and grow…
I know that my own intuition has been a part of my life as a therapist. So, I was eager to hear how these two women came to believe and create The Intuitive Psychology Association.
Let’s hear from Jill and Sarah in the first part of their interview!
“…we started having conversations about the industry, our work, the need to maybe create more innovation, particularly in coaching. And so we talked about how we worked, and although we come from different backgrounds, the principles underneath were the same. It was really working with intuition. It was being client centered. it was quite innovative. We coach a lot with eyes closed. And so we just became the change that we wanted to see in the industry, and we created intuitive psychology.”
“We’re actually accredited to the highest level in the entire (coaching) industry, which we’re so proud of. Just one of 11 globally in the world to credit. And we love this work. We love enabling people to tune back into their intuition and their own inner intelligence and using that as a form of, of healing and growth. “
Intuition’s definition… the memory of the truth.
“So I think the best definition (of intuition) that I’ve come across is actually by psychologist called Francis Vaughn, and she calls it “the memory of the truth.” And I think that’s just beautiful because that’s really what intuition is. It is the memory of what is true with a capital T. Without the conditions of society, without the conditions that we’ve learned for ourselves.”
“You know, we push down those gut feelings. Or it is in the intentional sense in the way that we use intuition; It’s going deeper than that and using it to access the unconscious so that you get these sudden, beautiful insights that remind you of who you are without those conditions and without the past. And you can tap into that intelligence. So that’s it in its simplest form, but I think it’s quite hard to describe because the minute you try to make something so almost mystical and magical tangible, it loses a little bit of its magic in a way.”
Intuition as a conduit between the conscious and unconscious mind…
“When we’re consciously processing, it’s just 5% approximately, and we do that mainly through the, the logical thinking mind, which is full of rational or irrational thought… Whereas intuition really blurs the lines between conscious and unconscious thought. It’s whole system thinking, it’s mind and body, which is why often when you have an intuitive reaction, a gut reaction, you know, you feel it in your body, so it’s this full system process that happens.”
Intuition creates safety because it’s in symbols and metaphors…
“For us, it’s really important that it’s not about re-traumatization. We hold so much in the body, yet we are always trying to think our way out of something rather than actually creating enough safety in the body to feel. And actually creating that safety to feel without re-traumatization. Yes, emotions may come up, but it’s not about being attached to the story, the long complex narrative, which is when the mind kicks in.”
“Intuition is in symbols and metaphors. It’s really beautiful without having to go into re-traumatization. So there is lots of work that we do to help someone create safety in the body to go in and access those parts of themselves. Because if we are only working with 5% of the conscious mind, we are missing so much.”
“I’ll give you a practical example. It might be that they are working on a relationship or dynamic in their life and they may see, um, an anchor, you know, weighing them down and kind of like it’s weighted and they’re dragging it through. Now that one symbol or a metaphor can instantly explain a huge amount without having to go through each and every instance.”
“And the client knows that to be true, and so they have that sudden rush of knowledge and that – And they have a gut feeling that it’s true. It’s the memory of the truth. It’s like, “This is true for me. I understand this and I know what this means.” And then they can use that information, take that awareness, move it into action to really move them forward in a way that’s deeply authentic for the client as well.”
Our discussion was one of the more fascinating and self-motivating conversations I’ve had here on SelfWork. In fact, One of the things I’ve done since I did this interview was in the mornings, I usually have a little quiet time by myself, and I have put my hand on my heart and said, “What do you need today?”
It’s really a neat way to begin your morning.
